Crime in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam has a high crime rate, which is in part fuelled by the presence of so many distracted tourists. Pickpockets are common although there is relatively little violent crime in Amsterdam. Bike and car theft are also a regular occurrence so it is worth double checking that you have locked up properly before leaving your vehicle. Trams and buses are usually busy even late at night, so it is safe to travel alone but when it comes to crime in Amsterdam, the same precautions need to be taken as would be in any other large European city.
