Food Guide - Dining Out in Amsterdam, Netherlands
Whatever your experience of Amsterdam, one thing you won't be disappointed by is the choice of food. Visitors to the city are often surprised at the sheer number of international restaurants offering dishes to suit everyone's taste. If you are dining out in Amsterdam and want to fit in with the locals there are plenty of cafes offering Dutch specialties from its famous croquets called 'vleeskroketten' to the humble pancake. Traditionally, Dutch dishes are based on simple ingredients such as boiled potatoes, boiled vegetables and other farmed food products but heavy international influences have made modern meals a little more exotic. A good place to start looking for decent restaurants when dining out in Amsterdam are Korte Leidsedwarsstraat and Lange Leidsedwarsstraat which are located near to the Leidseplein. If you are hungry but undecided about what you fancy stroll though these streets and you will no doubt find something to suit your taste from the abundance of restaurants on offer. Spuistraat, which runs parallel to Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, is also a good spot for more expensive restaurants.
Interestingly, much of the food in Amsterdam is heavily influenced by Indonesia and most of Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam serve Rijsttafel, a collection of small dishes consisting of many different kinds of Indonesian foods.
The service in Amsterdam is relaxed, sometimes bordering on lazy, with tourists dining out in Amsterdam often struggling to get a menu or be served quickly. However, this generally depends on the time of day you are eating and how much you are splashing out on your meal. Tips are not obligatory but are generally expected and vegetarians be warned, the Dutch like their meat and are not great at catering for those who do not.
