Useful Information
- A Museumkaart (Museum Card) allows you to visit more than 400 museums in the Netherlands including 29 in Amsterdam. It is valid for one year and it costs €39.95 (€22.45 those under 24).
- Always be alert to pickpockets who often take advantage of tired tourists on the trains to and from Schiphol International Airport and the city.
- While it is legal to buy and smoke cannabis in certain coffee shops it is unsafe and against the law to smoke in public. Drinking alcohol in the streets is also a no-no and could lead to a fine.
- Avoid taking pictures of the prostitutes in the red light district. If they catch you they are likely to start shouting which could lead to a rather embarrassing scene.
- Don't walk in the bike lanes and if you hear a bicycle bell behind you jump out of the way immediately - or expect to be mowed down.
- Try to remember to greet shop assistants on entering and leaving stores as in Amsterdam it is considered impolite to walk in and out without saying anything.
- All prices in the Netherlands by law include tax and tips so don't feel obliged to leave tips everywhere you go. It is uncommon to tip taxis.
