Although a generally very safe city for travellers, Athens has plenty of pickpockets looking for unwary visitors, especially in crowded areas such as metro stations, Plaka, Omonia and outdoor markets, so keep your belongings close to you. There are also various scams visitors should be aware of. Single male travellers should steer clear of apparently friendly strangers approaching them in central districts like Plaka and suggesting they visit a bar together – the conman will then disappear and you will end up with an exorbitant bill. Watch out for dishonest taxi drivers too, who will try to rip you off with extra charges, a ‘fixed fare’ or some other scam, such as charging the higher night rate during the day. If you have problems, take the cab’s registration number and report the driver to the tourist police.
