Food Guide - Dining Out in Athens, Greece

Greek cuisine is legendary, and Athens is one of the best places to sample all kind of Greek specialities from across the country. Traditional tavernas are the best places to try real Greek food, made with fresh ingredients. Olive oil, fresh vegetables, yoghurt, fish and a small amount of meat, particularly lamb and pork, feature on taverna menus in Athens, while kafeneia are simpler, café-like places where you can get a drink and snacks, and in an ouzeri you can sample often dozens of dishes called mezedes, like in a tapas bar, accompanied with a few glasses of ouzo. Mezedes are often eaten as a first course in restaurants, and include such things as stuffed vine leaves, taramosalata, grilled aubergines and olives. A wide range of fish and seafood dishes, including octopus and squid, are popular, along with fresh salads and moussaka. If you’re on a budget, Athenian street food is often very tasty and good value, and includes gyros and souvlaki, similar to kebabs.
