From January to December

Austria has some superb fishing, with lakes, glaciers, rivers and streams, there is a fantastic choice for the keen fisherman. You’ll find trout, char and pike in the beautiful clear waters of Austria’s streams and lakes. Fly-fishing is increasingly popular and Austria offers some of the best freshwater fly-fishing in Europe.

There are approximately 74 species of fish native to Austria, but with many of these becoming endangered, the legislation around fishing has become tighter. You will require a fishing card, which can be issued by the owner or landlord of a lake or river. However, the bigger rivers and lakes are public property and you can get a fishing card from the local tourist information centre very easily. The card is issued by the Österreichische Bundesforste (National Forest Administration) and you can pay and book a fishing day in a certain area online in advance. There are a number of fishing packages available which will include these permissions and can often include equipment, maps and guides as well.
