Main Sights in Barcelona, Spain
There is plenty for visitors to do, and Barcelona offers a wide range of attractions, with the city boasting historic architecture and museums, breathtaking scenery and sandy beaches.
Sagrada Familia by Antonio Gaudi
Sagrada Familia is one of the most visited attractions in Barcelona, with over 2 million people coming to see it every year. It is a giant temple designed by the master architect Antonio Gaudi, which has been under construction since 1882, with another 30 to 80 years to go before it is finished, depending on the funding available. Admission is around €10, and the attraction which opens at 09:00, can be found at Calle Mallorca 08034.
Las Ramblas
Las Ramblas, which is approximately 1.2 kilometres long, is Barcelona’s most famous street, and runs through the city centre, stretching from Port Vell (near the cruise port terminal) at the southern end and Placa Catalunya at the northern end. This street, which is mostly pedestrianised, houses numerous attractions including the Wax Museum, Erotica Museum, the Christopher Columbus monument and the modernist Boqueria Market.
Barcelona Aquarium
Barcelona Aquarium, at Port Vell, is an ideal destination for a family day out, and is a great way to entertain the kids. It features 35 different tanks, 11,000 animals and 450 different species, an underwater tunnel 80 metres long, six million litres of water and an Oceanarium, the only one of its kind in Europe. The aquarium is open from 09:30, and costs 17 € per adult, €12 for children aged from 4 to 12 years, and €14 for adults over 60.
Poble Espanyol de Montjuic
Poble Espanyol (or Spanish Village in English), is a small Spanish village featuring different quarters that replicate the style of houses and architecture from different parts of Spain. Poble Espanyol is also home to a whole host of specialist craft shops and workshops where visitors are able to see traditionally made Spanish goods. Poble Espanyol is the venue for the renowned flamenco show at tablao de Carmen.
La Pedrera - Casa Mila by Antonio Gaudi
La Pedera (or the quarry) is another of Antonio Gaudi's most famous creations, and was instrumental in completing this building. His characteristic wavy brick work and colourful tiles are also evident, and in the roof and attic, visitors can see an exhibition on Gaudi and his works. The building was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984, and is well worth a visit as it also offers tourists a great view of Barcelona.
