Bumba Meu-Boi
Ends: Tuesday 29 June
Once a year São Luis, the state capital of Maranhão, stages a festival dedicated to the established Brazilian folk tradition of Bumba Meu-Boi, a popular folk tale re-enacted through Brazilian dance. It tells the tale of a farm labourer who, having killed a farmer's ox, must resurrect it or face death himself.
The pageant serves to satirise the oppressive slave master, who has to withdraw the punishment of death as his prize beast is miraculously reanimated. The people of São Luis celebrate this cultural tradition by dressing up as oxen and other animals taken from the Brazilian Indian mythology, practicing capoeira and parading through the streets.
A group of singers and a chamador, or caller, introduces the animals and characters. The sight of people dancing in ox costumes provides a great source of amusement and the crowds will take any opportunity to heckle. You cannot get more Brazilian than this. Everyone feels involved. Not to be missed!
The celebrations also coincide with the religious celebrations of Saint Anthony (13 June), St John (24 June) and St Peter (29 June).
