Sightseeing in British Columbia, Canada
Rating (9/10)
British Columbia spoils travellers for choices when it comes to sightseeing. From historic Victoria, and cosmopolitan Vancouver, visitors to BC will also recognize the breathtaking coastline, lush valleys, rain forests and three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Yoho, Kootenay National Park and Sgaang Gwaii Island off the Queen Charlotte Islands.
In Vancouver you will find the Big Bus Company and Vancouver Trolley Company which operate hop on and off bus tours. Gray Line West bus tours take in the best of Vancouver from Chinatown and Stanley Park to Granville Island. Guided walking tours can be booked with Edible BC for a foodie trek around the city or for a historic tour in June - August you can take a Gastown tour. Cycling tours of the city can be booked with City By Cycle Tours which take in the best sites of the city. Cost €50 for 4 hours. A different way to experience the city is with the Seabus, an aquatic bus operating daily crossing the Burrard Inlet.
In Victoria you can take a walking tour with the Architectural Institute of BC, or book a seafront cycle tour with Cycle Treks. Gray Line West runs a 90 minute tour of the city from a double decker bus (departs from the Fairmont Empress Hotel). For something different take a fascinating three hour lantern tour of Chinatown with Hidden Dragon Tours. There are also many coach tours and minibus tours that cover the best of British Columbia's breathtaking scenery. Highlights include Kootenay, Queen Charlotte Islands, Okanagan Valley, rural British Columbia, and land-sea tours for whale-watching and harbour cruises. The Whistler Mountaineer is a great option for scenic site seeing by rail. The three hour journey runs between Vancouver and Whistler. Similarly the Rocky Mountaineer is a scenic two day travel between Vancouver and Banff and Calgary or between Whistler and Jasper, available April to mid-October. Other tourist rail-lines that run in BC include the Alberni Pacific Railway in Port Alberni that runs on former Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway trackage. The Kettle Valley Steam Railway runs out of Summerland on the last remaining portion of the famous Kettle Valley Railway. The Kamloops Historical Railway runs over the Kelowna Pacific, CN, and CPR. The White Pass and Yukon Route operate out of Skagway, AL and northern BC.
