Food Guide - Dining Out in British Columbia, Canada

Food and Restaurants in British Columbia, Restaurants in Vancouver and Restaurants in Victoria

British Columbia offers a unique selection of restaurants and dining experiences, which is no surprise as British Columbia is rich in natural resources. Famous for seafood from the Pacific Ocean BC yields a great variety of dishes, including king crab, oysters, shrimp and other shellfish, as well as cod, haddock and salmon (coho, spring, chum, sockeye and pink). The province is also rich in fruit grown in the valleys most notably the Okanagan Valley. Expect apples, peaches, pears, plums, apricots, strawberries and Bing cherries, cranberries and loganberries. Both red and white wines are equally famous, as are sparkling wines and icewines produced in the Okanagan Valley. BC also exports Victoria Creams, a famous chocolate delicacy. In Vancouver particularly, visitors can expect an infinite number of affordable ethnic eateries (Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian and Italian) and world class restaurants. Sushi is a firm favourite. Restaurants generally serve food until 10 or 11 pm. British Columbia's cuisine derives its rich flavour from a blend of influences; it has a British culinary base enriched by the contribution of the Aboriginal peoples and the different Asian communities (Vancouver has one of the largest Chinese quarters in North America) that have made the province their home.

Fruit and vegetable markets in British Columbia

British Columbia has some excellent fruit and vegetable markets to be proud of. Almost every town has its own market. At any given market you will always find mouth watering produce, including unbeatable fruits, vegetables, organic goods, fish, seafood and meats. There are over 105 farmers' markets throughout British Columbia. In Vancouver head to the fruit and vegetable market on Granville Island, the Winter Farmer’s Market, or the UBC Farm Market. The Surrey Urban Farmer’s Market is popular in Surrey and open June to October. Kelowna fruit stands in summer are always popular. You will often spot farmers selling produce and vegetables along British Columbia's roads or see signs in the country for farmer's markets. Note that some markets only accept cash as payment and are open on Saturdays.
