Crime in Bulgaria

Bulgaria still has a problem with organised crime, and there have been a number of gang-related killings in Sofia and elsewhere. However, foreign tourists are extremely unlikely to ever encounter this side of Bulgarian life. Petty crime is rife in the cities, so you should always take care of your belongings and watch out for pickpockets on public transport and busy areas such as train stations and main tourist sites. Often, these are young children, operating in gangs. Car crime is also common, so if you bring a new or clearly expensive foreign car into the country, be very careful where you park it. If travelling overnight on trains, particularly across the borders, book a couchette, as there have been robberies on trains in Bulgaria.
