Due to the cosmopolitan environment that Cairns offers, there is no shortage of places to dine out. Eating out in Cairns is generally refreshingly cheap with counter meals, set menus and all-you-can-eats featuring highly. But what the city really does best, is the huge portions of locally-sourced, and particularly excellent (and surprisingly cheap) seafood.
For visitors on even more of a shoestring budget, the food courts of the Esplanade night market and the Cairns central shopping centre also offer a range of fast-food options. The city is home to a number of international cuisines, with restaurants from neighbouring Southeast Asia, particularly popular. Many of the city’s restaurants, however, are keen to offer travellers a taste of truly Australian cuisine, using produce native to Australia.
Another thing that stands out in Cairns is the wine, with the wines of Queensland considered to be some of the country’s best. However one thing to bear in mind when visiting the city is that the law all over Australia is very rigid for drinking and driving offences with severe penalties and even prison. Drinking in public places including parks and beaches can also attract fines. In Queensland, the fine is A$75 for the first offence.
