There is plenty on offer in Cairns for those who want to explore the local architecture to those visitors who simply want to relax and explore the beauty of the region on land and by sea.

The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the only living thing on earth visible from outer space and is probably the best known among the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. It is one of the main highlights for any trip to Cairns, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in both Cairns and Australia as a whole. The Great Barrier Reef, the most extensive coral reef system in the world, is made up of more than 2900 individual reefs and 900 Islands, and offers divers and snorkellers a world of colour and access to thousands of species of diverse marine life. Expect to pay from around A$140 for an introductory dive, and a Government Environmental Management Charge of $5 is levied for all adults and children 4 years and over entering the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage area.

The Flecker Botanic Gardens

The Flecker Botanic Gardens, which house 38 hectares of plants and flora unique to North Queensland, are located in the leafy suburb of Edge Hill, and admission for the general public is free (between 7.30am-5.30pm). The on-site restaurant is open daily, and offers a mouth watering selection of meals and savory desserts such as their famous waffles with fresh cream and fruits.

The Cairns Museum

The Cairns Museum is situated on the corner of Shields and Lake Street, in the historic Old School of Arts Building. The museum has a number of collections and provides a diversity of material depicting the development of Cairns into the cosmopolitan city it is today. A small entry fee is charged (A$2 for children and A$5 for adults), as the museum is operated on a voluntary basis, and is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday receives no financial assistance.

The Cairns Regional Gallery

The Cairns Regional Gallery hosts exhibitions of fine arts from major Australian and international collections covering historical and contemporary art including the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. The gallery, which is located at the corner of Abbott and Shields Street, is open between 10am until 5pm Monday to Saturday, and from 1pm to 5pm on Sunday. Admission is A$5 per person.
