Suggested Itinerary
Day 1: Start by seeing what you really came to see, The Great Barrier Reef. Spend all day here with one of the many tour operators departing from Cairns or Port Douglas. Try an introductory dive if you haven't before (you don't need any experience) or grab some fins and snorkel to get up close and personal with some fishy friends.
Day 2: Have some fun and adventure with day 2. Spend half the day white water rafting on the Barron River and then go Skydiving. Though if skydiving’s not your thing, you can also spend the other half of the day horse riding or with a relaxing balloon ride. Alternatively, if you want to try something a bit more adventurous, go for a full day white water rafting on the Tully River.
Days 3-4: Time to see one of nature’s many beauties that grace this part of the world. Head north to the Daintree Rainforest and experience a World Heritage listed area. There are a number of day tours Daintree Cape Tribulation rainforest departing in Port Douglas, Cairns and the northern beaches daily. Most also include a crocodile spotting cruise on the Daintree River.
Days 5 & 6: If you fancy getting behind the wheel and experiencing the Aussie outback for yourself, hire a car and drive yourself or get an organised tour to the Undara Lava Tubes. They were formed around 190,000 years ago when a major volcano erupted. The outside hardened, but the interior allowed the molten lava to flow through. You can stay overnight in the unique carriage accommodation or sleep on a swag outside under the stars.
Day 7: Definitely one for the adventure-seeker in you. The Kuranda Skyrail is an award-winning cable-car journey that will take you above the rainforest up to the village town of Kuranda. Rainforestation, will take you on a cruise through forest waterways on an amphibious army duck, let you meet some of Australia’s favourite animals and has traditional performances by the Pamagirri dance troupe. Combine this with a day exploring Kuranda and its markets, Bird World, Butterfly Sanctuary and Koala Gardens. There is also the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, at the coastal end of Skyrail.
Day 8: Hire a car and travel north from Cairns along the coast road to Port Douglas. Stop at Cairns Tropical Zoo on the way and then Port Douglas and Mossman Gorge. If you are starting from Port Douglas, spend the morning at Breakfast with the Birds at Rainforest Habitat. It comes highly recommended as does the accompanying wildlife park. You could easily spend half a day here. If you miss Breakfast with the Birds, you can also try Lunch with the Lorikeets.
Day 9: Head back to Cairns, ready for the long-haul flight back home.
