- Post Offices are open from 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday through to Friday. Many shops and news agents also sell stamps.
- All the major Australian Banks have branches in Cairns, and are open between 9.30 am and 4.00 pm from Monday to Thursday - 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on Fridays. There is also no shortage of ATMs; they can be found everywhere in the Cairns area that accept all types of cards from all banks, anywhere in the world.
- When swimming at a beach, always swim in the enclosed patrolled area. This area is to protect swimmers from Jellyfish (or commonly known in Australia as stingers). When swimming in creeks, rivers and streams, be cautious of branches and logs beneath the waters surface. Look out for crocodile warning signs.
- Australia uses 240V mains electricity and three-point power sockets. Universal adapters are available from most gift stores and electrical shops throughout Cairns.
- A 24 hour medical service is available to all the major hotels and there is also a 24 hour medical surgery at the Corner of Florence and Grafton Street, beneath the Cairns Day Surgery building.
- Chemists and Pharmacies are usually open to 9pm at night and they are located in the City Place and along Abbott Street.
- Tipping is not mandatory in Australia. However if you have experienced particularly good service it is greatly appreciated, particularly in the hospitality sector.
- GST – Goods and Services Tax is included in most bills and will be itemised on your receipt. All prices displayed such as on menus and tour brochures will include GST.
- Cairns backpackers wishing to visit Aboriginal communities need to plan in advance and inquire at regional information centres as to whether written permits or oral permission is necessary for particular communities.

- Smoking is not allowed in any place in Australia that sells food, although some eateries will have designated smoking areas.
