Internal Flights and Major International Airports in Cambodia
Cambodia has eight airports taking both international and domestic flights, the main ones being the capital Phnom Penh in the south and Siem Reap International in the north. If you intend on travelling to other parts of the Cambodia during your stay, flying is the easiest and quickest option. Phnom Penh International is located 10km from the the capital whilst Siem Reap, the second largest airport in Cambodia is 8km outside Siem Reap City. Several of the smaller airports such as Koh Kong and Mondulkiri are only used for internal flights and do not have customs.
Getting to and from the Airport at Cambodia
The easiest method of getting to and from the airport in Cambodia is taxi. They are cheap, readily available and convenient. A twenty minute taxi transfer from the airport will cost between £2-£5. Alternatively, if you're feeling daring, take a motorcycle taxi, known locally as Motodup. The cost is a little over £1 though they are slowly and less comfortable than a car taxi.
Renting Cars in Cambodia
Car rental in Cambodia is very popular as it is cheap, easy and a great way of exploring the country. However, in order to be able to drive yourself you will need a valid Cambodian drivers licence. International driver licences are not recognised. The alternative of hiring a car in Cambodia is to hire a car with a driver for either half a day or a full day. This gives the added bonus of having a local who knows the lie of the land and for a fee of £20 a day including fuel is well worth it.
Drivers License Requirements in Cambodia
Anybody driving in Cambodia must have a valid Cambodian drivers licence. An International driver licence is not recognised. Visitors to Cambodia are advised to hire a car with a driver and given the chaotic roads and unpredictable drivers in Cambodia, this seems like the safest option.
Cambodia by Bus
Buses are the most popular mode of transport for visitor's travelling around Cambodia. There are several bus companies of comfortable air conditioned buses to all the major provincial cities at affordable prices. Some companies offer deluxe buses which are slightly more expensive but are better equipped, with snacks, on board toilets and even a tour guide. Prices vary on the distant of your journey and tickets are purchased either directly from the bus company or through your travel agency or hotel. Most journeys you can expect to pay between £5-£7.
Cambodia by Train
The State Railway system in Cambodia has largely been ignored, the running times are inconsistent and the timetable is irregular. For example, the trains from Battambang to Phnom Penh run once a week. The situation is so bad, makeshift trains made out of bamboo which run at 25 miles per hour have been manufactured. Cheap fares make this popular with residents though as there is only one track, the train with the lightest load has to be removed from the track to allow the other to pass.
Cambodia by Taxi
Taxis in Cambodia are cheap, readily available and do not run on a meter. They are easily the best means of transport in and around towns and cities though it is advisable to agree on a price before you get in. The main difficulty for tourists when travelling by taxi in Cambodia is the drivers do not speak English, but will recognise your destination if your pronunciation is close. However, to save any misunderstanding it's best to write down your destination to hand to the driver, or better still, have a map with both Cambodian and English translations and point where you need to be on the map. Alternatively you can a motorbike taxi which are half the cost of a car though are not as safe or comfortable.
Cycling in Cambodia
Cambodia has some glorious scenery and one of the best ways to appreciate this beautiful country is by bicycle. There are not many cycling tour operators or rental shops though so if you want to get the most out of a cycling holiday in Cambodia you are advised to take your own equipment with you. The roads are very dusty and poorly maintained so heavy duty bikes like mountain bikes are most suited. A racer is definitely out. Make sure your bike is in good condition before you begin your journey and because of the amount of dust it is advisable to wash it down at the end of each day to ensure it remains in stable working condition for the rest of the tour.
