Main Sights in Cambodia

Cambodia is a colourful country blessed with unexplored natural beauty and fascinating temples with breathtaking architecture built during the days of the Khmer empire. Though many areas of the country require major development, for the intrepid explorer Cambodia is full of surprises.

Angkor Wat in Cambodia

Angkor Wat in the city of Angkor is regarded as one of the most fantastical examples of breathtaking architecture and is considered by historians to be the single most religious monument in the world. The complex represents Hindu mythology and the ornate temple is regarded as a masterpiece.

Bakheng in Cambodia

The Bakheng temple was the first of its kind to be built in Cambodia and sits atop a 60 metre high summit. It is popular with tourist for the spectacular scenery overlooking Angkor Wat to the east and the sunset in the west.

Angkor Thom in Cambodia

Angkor Thom is one of the largest ancient Khmer cities finished in the early 13th century. Its huge scale is daunting and is surrounding by 8 metre high walls. The centre piece of Angkor Thom is a magnificent Bayon and to the east is the Royal Palace.

The Bayon Temple in Cambodia

Of all the monuments in Cambodia, the Bayon temple in Angkor is the most photographed and written about. When the site was originally discovered by explorers it was overgrown and was being destroyed by the jungle. At the beginning of the 20th century restoration work began and the Bayon was discovered as a three tiered pyramid temple with a central tower standing 45 metres tall with faces carved into its pillars.

Phimeanakas and the Royal Palace

Though much of the Royal Palace and nearby Phimeanakas has been left in ruins the grounds are still a fascinating place to wander about in. Though the surroundings are lush and overgrown the paths to the Phimeanakas are accessible. The monument itself is a three tiered cpmplex standing over 30 metres tall and, once believed to be covered in gold, the four stairways are guarded by stone lions.

Ratanakiri

Ratanakiri in the north-east plateau of Cambodia near the border to Vietnam is a sparsely populated province renowned for its rich blend of natural beauty. Its environmental characteristics are breathtaking and form rolling hills, dramatic mountain, crater lakes and gushing waterfalls. In Ratanakiri you can explore enchanting forests and visit quaint friendly villages, and though it may feel you are out in the wilderness miles from civilisation the experience is liberating.

Sihanoukville Beach Resort

Sihanoukville is Cambodia's main beach resort. The lush white sands and warm, gentle water of the Gulf of Thailand are the perfect place to unwind in your own little piece of paradise. The town has been under development since the 1950's and is much more urban and cosmopolitan than the rest of Cambodia.

Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia and was largely built by the French after their arrival in the 19th century. Situated on three rivers the seductive atmosphere bustles with Asian vibrancy and the sweeping boulevards influenced by the colonial French are metamorphosing back to the traditional styles of the Khmer Rouge.

The Tuol Sleng Museum

In 1975 the Tuol Svay Prey high school was turned into a prison by Pol Pot's security forces and became the because detention centre for torture before prisoners were shipped to the extermination camps at Choeung Ek. Today, the site has been turned into a museum and serves as a testament to the brutal crimes of Pol Pot.

Choeung Ek Killing Fields

The chilling killing fields in Choeung Ek is the extermination camp where around 17000 people were killed by Pol Pot's brutal regime in order to save bullets. In 1980, a mass grave was unearthed and around 9000 bound and blindfolded bodies exhumed. The museum commemorates those that died here and the slightly macabre display of skulls are visible behind glass panels.

The National Museum in Phnom Penh

Just north of the Royal Palace Cambodia's National Museum is housed in a stylish terracotta building and surrounding by four delightful courtyards and enchanting gardens. Some of the museums highlights include the eight armed statue of Vishnu, the ancient statue of Shiva and the sublime statue of Jayavarman VII.
