Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Start your Cambodian journey in Phnom Penh and transfer to a local hotel. This city was once considered one of the most beautiful in the Orient, and despite its recent turbulent history it still retains a colonial charm. In the afternoon visit the National Museum, the Silver Pagoda and the Royal Palace.

Day 2: Fly to Siem Reap, and sample the local hospitality by booking yourself into a resort with a spa, for that added touch of luxury. Start exploring the mysterious Royal city of Angkor Thom. Its 50-tower temple is an awesome sight. Further visits to the surroundings of the complex include the Baphou, Elephant Terraces, Lepper King Terrace and Royal Place area. Afternoon, visit the intricately carved Khmer ruins at Angkor Wat – one of the world’s most impressive ruins. End the day at Phnom Bakheng, the first major temple to be constructed in the Angkor area. The Bakheng’s hilltop location makes it the most popular sunset, offering a panoramic view of Angkor Wat and West Baray.

Day 3: Head down (and then bumpily up) to Bokor Hill while you still can: this eerie, erstwhile colonial-era getaway is in the process of being transformed into a resort for Cambodia’s nouveau-riche. The sunny seaside town of Sihanoukvillemakes for a great launching pad to the 60-plus islands dotted across Cambodia’s largely unexplored south coast. This is a great unchartered territory to get your teeth into and will show you an unknown picture of the country.

Day 4: Hop a ferry or hire your own boat and immerse yourself in the local life of the fishing villages on Koh Sdach and Koh Kong. Disembark at Krong Koh Kong and choose your own Cardamoms adventure: drift up from Andoung Tek to the eco-adventure village of Chi Phat or head north on the back of a small (but rugged!) motorbike along a disused logging trail to Pramouy, the dusty district capital.

Day 5: Spend a day getting acquainted with the local transport links. The Bamboo Railway from Pursat is less touristy than its Battambang counterpart — clack down to Chheu Tom and head onwards to the industrious port town Kampong Chhnang to set sail on a Tonle Sap adventure. This is a perfect way to end your adventure.

Day 6: Head back to Phnom Penh to take your flight home. You could even spend another day here, just reacquainting yourself with the charm of this intricate and hugely culturally significant part of the world.
