Geography of Caribbean

The Caribbean region is located in the tropics and encompasses over 4000 km. It stretches from the Bahamas in the north to Guyana and Suriname in the south. It also includes Belize which is borders Mexico and Guatemala in Central America. The countries of the Caribbean are widely varied in size as well as in landforms and geology. But three marine geographical features make up the region known as the Caribbean. Firstly there is an outer ring of mainly coral islands with white sandy beaches, then an inner ring of more volcanic islands, with black sands, and thirdly the coast of Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana (Cayenne). Many of the Caribbean countries are subject to earthquakes. Along coastal areas in you will find lots of coral reefs, large and small sand barriers, mangroves, lagoons, river estuaries and high cliffs. The most populated Caribbean countries include Cuba, Dominican Republic and Haiti, whilst those with the smallest population include Turks and Caicos, Montserrat and the British Virgin Islands.
