Easter

Easter is a highly important festival in Corfu – in fact, it tops all the others by a considerable margin. There are many church services on the weeks leading up to Easter and on Easter Saturday, as midnight strikes, there is a surge of joy throughout the little island. Fireworks displays suddenly colour the skies and people run out into the streets saying “Christos Anesti” (Christ is risen).

It is a little like our New Year, but with heavy and exceedingly positive religious overtones. Large processions then take place along the streets of the towns, with everyone carrying a candle. They will then return home and make the sign of a cross over their door with the candle as a sign of tribute and good luck. Easter cuisine is sumptuous, with spit roasted lamb, dancing, music and much merry-making!
