Pot Throwing

Easter is Corfu’s biggest celebration, so if you find yourself there over the Easter break you should definitely watch out for this custom. On Easter Saturday morning, at 11am on the dot, Corfiots throw pots (of many different shapes and sizes) from the balconies of the town.

We were quite concerned for the health and safety of visitors upon learning about this tradition, however, the area is controlled and nobody should find themselves bashed on the head!

The reason for the tradition dates back to prehistoric customs where pottery was smashed at burials. Some schools also relate it to Mary’s discovery that Jesus’ tomb was empty. This event draws large crowds and is a very merry occasion and certainly worth a visit if you find yourselves on holiday at this time.
