From April to October

Spain's southern coast is known for fresh fish and seafood, grilled or fried quickly in sizzling olive oil. Sardines barbecued on skewers at beachside restaurants are a popular and unforgettable treat. Gazpacho and ajo blanco (based on almonds, grapes, and garlic) are typical cold soups that are refreshing in hot weather. Málaga is best for traditional Spanish cooking, with a wealth of bars and seafood restaurants serving fritura malagueña, the city's famous fried seafood. Torremolinos' Carihuela district is also a good destination for lovers of Spanish seafood. The resorts serve every conceivable foreign cuisine as well, from Thai to the Scandinavian smorgasbord. Expect to pay more at the internationally renowned restaurants in Marbella.

At the other end of the scale, and often even more enjoyable, are the chiringuitos. Strung out along the beaches, these rough-and-ready, summer-only restaurants serve seafood fresh off the boats. Because there are so many foreigners, meals on the coast are served earlier than elsewhere in Andalusia, with restaurants opening at 1 PM or 1:30 PM for lunch and 7 PM or 8 PM for dinner.
