St. Nikolaos Day

St Nikolaos day is celebrated throughout Greece in respect of their patron saint and is traditionally the start of the holidays and the exchanging of presents. It is a particularly auspicious day for the townsfolk of Agios Nikolaos as St. Nikolaos is also the patron saint of the city. He was famous for his good deeds, providing dowries for poor women and for protecting fishermen and sailors. Each year fishing boats pay tribute decorated with blue and white lights.
