Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Near Chania there are combinations of both Historical and Natural sites of interest. Elafonisi, a lagoon so shallow that you can walk to the islet on foot, the sunset is beautiful here. Omalos plateau; one of the highest points in Crete offers breathtaking views and is perfect for arranging walks.


Day 2: The world-famous Samaria Gorge offers the chance to walk through the riverbed toward the Sidheres Portes or Iron Gates where the gorge narrows to only 3 meters width and 600 meters in height. In Chania itself you can visit the Old Town and Old Venetian Port, the fort of Firkas that houses the Naval museum and Souda Bay, one of the Meditteranean’s most important NATO anchorages.


Day 3: The old town of Rethymnon is a must see while in Crete, The Fortezza reputed to be the largest Venetian castle ever built is well worth the visit. On the way to the village of Plakias, you can stop at Arkadi and Preveli monasteries.


Day 4: Heraklion is near the Ancient monument of Knossos, a palace of the ancient Minoan civilization and a must-see site while in Crete. On the site you can visit the Great Palace, the little palace, the royal villa, the house of the high priest, the caravan Serai and the royal temple tomb sanctuary. Gortyna is a collection of large stones inscribed with the Gortyn Law Code, based on the Minoan laws. The Palace of Phaistos, the caves of Matala and Heraklion’s archaeological museum are also worth including.


Day 5: Lassithi, situated near Agios Nikolaos with its picturesque port on the lake, Elounda a famous fishing village near the island of Spinalonga, Sitia and Ierapetra with its Venetian Fort. A little further afield Moni Toplou and the Ancient City of Zakros are interesting sites along with the famous beach of Vai, the only beach in the Meditteranean with such a large number of Palm trees.


Day 6: Lounge around on one of these idyllic sandspots before returning to the harsh realities of life either today or tomorrow.
