The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern side of the island Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles. The other side of the island is occupied by Haiti.
The Dominican Republic is one of the largest countries in the Antilles, occupying a territory of close to 50,000km squared. The coastline is host to numerous small islands and coves, and there are many calm, secluded bays to be found. The country is also highly mountainous, with no fewer than four different mountain ranges on the mainland. Many large lakes and four major rivers are dotted across the country.
