Dhow Cruises in Dubai
The Arabic wooden dhow is still used to transport commercial cargo and dhows are still built in the traditional way at dhow yards in Dubai, well worth a visit. An evening aboard a dhow, either on the Dubai Creek or sailing along the coast, is a wonderfully atmospheric and memorable experience. Lunch and dinner cruises on the Creek are most popular, entertainment is offered by some charter companies and dhows are licenced. A two hour dinner cruise costs AED 150 – 200. Dhows can be hired at Dibba on the East Coast for diving, fishing, turtle and dolphin watching along the coast to the Musandam. Prices start at AED 370 for divers and AED 300 for non divers. Equipment hire is not included but is available at the dive center at Dibba.
Another popular way to discover old Dubai is to take your own abbra (ferry) from one of the abbra stations along the Creek. You should pay no more than AED 100 but the boatman will haggle. The round trip from the mouth of the Creek to the bridges will take one hour. It is advisable to buy a guide book as the boatman does not do commentary and communication may be difficult.
