Heritage and City Tours in Dubai
Dubai has a rich heritage and visitors are encouraged to take a tour of the city by hop on hop off bus, coach and by foot to discover the old and the new Dubai. The many tour companies offer standard and bespoke tours in air conditioned vehicles and will pick you up at your hotel. Live or recorded commentaries are multi lingual. Walking tours are conducted by Blue Badge guides who are multi lingual. A good starting point is the Dubai Museum housed in the old Al Fahedi Fort. It is highly creative and offers state of the art visual and audio presentations of all parts of life from Dubai’s past. Walk through Bastakiya, one of the oldest heritage sites dating back to the early 1900s, former settlement of the Iranian traders.
The area located by the Creek is characterized by traditional wind tower houses built around courtyards and clustered together around winding alleyways. Bastakiya has been beautifully restored and some of the houses have been converted into art galleries, restaurants, shops and guest houses. Maps of this conservation area are available on site. Al Shindagha at the mouth of the Creek is another conservation area where you will find the restored Sheikh Saeed’s House, dating back to 1896, former home of the Ruler of Dubai, now a museum, and the Heritage and Diving Village which focuses on Dubai’s maritime past, pearl diving, traditional crafts, local cuisine. Traditional folklore and dances are performed during festivals and celebrations.
