Dubai is on the Tropic of Cancer and it has an arid, desert climate with very hot, dry, often humid summers for 7 months of the year and warm winters with infrequent rains. Dubai is the second largest of the seven emirates making up the United Arab Emirates. It is roughly 4000 square kilometers in area and is located on the Arabian Peninsular bordering Oman, Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf. The interior is mainly salt plains and desert separated from Oman to the north by the Hajar mountain range which forms a natural watershed giving winter rains and the source of drinkable mineral water. Dubai which gives its name to the emirate and the capital city is separated by the Creek, a deep natural waterway which has played an important role in the development of Dubai. The population currently is 2.2 million rising 8% yearly comprising 20% emiratis and 80 % foreigners of many nationalities. Dubai is approximately 3500 miles from the UK.
