Faro itself is not exactly on the beach, but Praia de Faro, the closest beach to the city, is within easy reach and near to Faro Airport. The beach is a long strip of sand accessible via a convenient pedestrian bridge and offers a peaceful, serene atmosphere for a large beach so close to the city. The beach itself is a wide sandbar, has restaurants and is home to many events organized by the municipality throughout the year. It is also a good spot for water sports. Two other beautiful beaches near Faro are Ilha da Barreta, and Ilha da Culatra, off the coast from Olhão. Both are accessible via ferry boats.
