Shop hours: Shops in Fes are usually open from 9.00 until 12.30 then from 14.30 until 20.00. Some shops may close earlier for prayer.

Electricity: Plug sockets in Fes take a European round two-pin plug. 220 volts is the standard although many places in the medina still have 110 volts sockets.
Donkey watch: there may be no cars in the medina, but watch out for donkeys and mules. Many of the streets are incredibly narrow and you’ll often find yourself jumping into doorways or squeezing up against walls to avoid a fast moving mule. If you hear the word ‘balak’ yelled when in the medina, it essentially means ‘get out of the way, donkey coming through’.
Lost in the medina: If you get lost in the medina (which is highly likely at some point), don’t panic. Most shop keepers will be happy to point you on your way.
Smell of the tanneries: It may be an amazing sight, but the pungent smell of tanneries can bring the romance of it crashing back to earth. The stench is partly due to pigeon dung and cow urine which is used in the creation of the dye. To subdue the smell, take a sprig of mint with you to hold under your nose.
Taking photos: Taking photos of people without asking permission isn’t polite and is likely to invite a negative response. You may also be asked for a little money if you ask to take someone’s photo in the medina.
Faux Guides: The biggest annoyance you’ll encounter in Fes is the advances of Faux Guides (unofficial Guides) around the entrance to the Medina. These people usually after commission from shops and your unofficial guided tour may quickly turn into a guided tour of carpet shops etc where you’ll be pressured to buy at inflated tourist prices. To avoid this, try to go with an official guide.
Internet Cafes: If your hotel doesn’t offer internet access, your best bet is to head for the ville nouvelle. Try London Cyber on Ave De La Liberte, Teleboutique Cyber Club or Cyber Club which are both on Blvd Mohammed.
A compass: Having a compass on you could be helpful for finding your way around the medina of Fes.
