Scoppio del Carro

A big event in Florence at the Piazza del Duomo, is the Scoppio del Carro, or the ‘explosion of the cart’, which dates back over 350 years. A wagon built in 1622 is pulled through the streets behind white oxen decorated in flowers to the square between the Baptistry and Cathedral. Fitted with an arsenal of fireworks, the cart awaits a dove-shaped rocket (symbolising the Holy Spirit) from the Cathedral altar which sets off the fireworks on impact. A huge bang points to a good harvest, and a parade continues afterwards.
