Patras Carnival

Greece is well known for the carnivals that take place in the country during the Greek orthodox Easter. A few of the more popular carnivals in Greece are the Patras Carnival in Peloponnese, the Carnival of Xanthi in Thrace, the Rethymno Carnival in Crete, the Corfiot Carnival and the Naoussa Carnival in Macedonia.

The carnivals consist of two weeks of feasts that commence on Tsiknopempti (Smoky Thursday) with a series of cultural and theatrical events which fill the streets, theatres, cultural centers and squares of the entire country. The celebrations end with a huge party known as ‘Koulouma’ on Ash Monday, 41 days before Easter.
