The Epiphany and Blessing of the waters

Location: Greece
Starts:
Ends:

Greece is a very religious country with a great deal of importance being laid on religious festivities. The Epiphany and Blessing of the waters are religious services held in January to mark the end of the Christmas season.

The Apokreas or Carnival is held in February and lasts for the three weeks preceding Lent’s forty days of fasting. The weeks are filled with celebrations, eating, drinking and dancing. The season comes to a head on the last day, Tyrofagis Sunday, where Carnival parades are held throughout Greece.

The next day is called Clean Monday and marks the end of Apokries and is the first day of Lent. Holy Week and Easter Sunday in March is the biggest Greek Festival and there are many events leading up to and on Easter Sunday. Celebrations vary by the area of Greece you are in. The week of Christmas is celebrated with much fanfare in the country.
