Dia de La Raza (Columbus Day)

Guatemalans have mixed feelings about this festival, because many indigenous people feel that the discovery of the Americas by Europeans was the beginning of their enslavement. However, many people do celebrate the survival of indigenous cultures in any case. The term Dia de la Raza (Day of the Race), comes from the notion that the “race” is a mixture of colonial (European) and indigenous elements. The celebrations centre on Guatemala City in the Plaza Mayor (Main Square), Sometimes there are protests, so whilst the celebration is mostly peaceful, it is best to exercise some caution if you intend to go.
