Independence Day

Independence Day is a national holiday in Guatemala and the celebrations that take place are extensive. In the run-up Independence Day, schools and buses are decorated with patriotic motifs. In the school assemblies students they sing the national anthem. On In Antigua (Guatemala) school bands, consisting of drums and marimbas, march around the Central Park. Over Guatemala City, there are aerobatics, which are watched by the President and thousands of others. As the day comes to a close, children and adults can be seen waving small plastic Guatemalan flags in the streets and the stores are decked out in Blue and White decorations. Many Guatemalans take the opportunity to travel to more traditional tourist areas to watch celebrations.
