Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the Black Christ Esquipulas

The figure of the Black Christ was commissioned by Spanish conquistadors and made by the local Mayans. It was carved out of dark wood in 1594 and was first placed in the church in the following year. During the pilgrimage it is dressed in white satin and adorned with jewels. The pilgrimage is the culmination of a week long festival in the town.
