The 26th of July commemorates Cuban independence and is a massive holiday throughout the nation. The carnival in Havana is raucously celebrated, with a great deal of dancing, singing, live music and plenty of alcohol.
The date in fact marks the day on which Fidel Castro led his initial, failed attack on the Batista regime, although it set off the events which led to the revolution and the overthrowing of Batista.
