The Finns have been known to enjoy a tipple and they certainly like music: Helsinki is known as a hub for the music scene in Northern Europe, with metal rock and punk gigs easy to find. There’s no shortage of bars, clubs and live music venues then, whether you’re gay, straight, like to dance or just want to drink and chat. It’s useful to note that the legal drinking age is 18, but the age at which you can go into a club varies between 18 and 24 at the discretion of the owners. It’s best to have some ID with you. Where you decide to hang out is down to your own personal taste. As a guide, the area around Central Railway Station tends to have more generic bars and clubs which cater for all comers.
Kamppi and Punavuori districts are where the trendy media and arts set hangs out. If you’re looking for something a bit more bohemian though, head to Kallio, the workers’ district, while Töölö district is popular among older, more cultured types. If you’re looking for live music, Tavastia (Urho Kekkosen katu 4-6) is a good place to check out up-an-coming Finnish and Nordic music.
