History of Honolulu, Hawaii
Home to the only royal residence on US soil, Iolani Palace, Honolulu’s history is rich with culture and diversity. Originally settled by Polynesian peoples in the 12th century, Captain William Brown docked in Honolulu Harbour in 1794 becoming the first foreigner to the island. King Kamehameha I officially relocated his royal court to what is now downtown Honolulu in 1804 and moved the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom to Honolulu in 1845. As the city grew and developed, it became the dominant hub of business, commerce, and shipping for the Hawaiian Islands. Honolulu’s harbours and its strategic location in the Pacific Ocean attracted the US military to build a permanent residence there.
Playing a major role in not just US history but also the world, Honolulu endured the overthrow of the monarchy, rejoiced in the establishment of statehood, and mourned the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour during World War II. Since then, the city has grown tremendously through trade/commerce, agricultural riches such as sugar and pineapple, and through tourism – its biggest draw today.
