Main Sights in Honolulu, Hawaii
A big city in a tropical paradise, Honolulu is the gateway to the Hawaiian Islands. Visitors will be amazed at all the history and culture Honolulu has to offer. Even more so, travellers will be left speechless at the beauty of the island from the highest cliff to the lush landscape to the sandy beaches. Warm and welcoming locals will lull you into the Aloha Spirit where you’ll be content to nap in the breezy sunshine or sit back with your favourite cocktail and watch the sunset.
Waikiki Beach
Made famous by countless films and television, Waikiki Beach is the centrepiece of Hawaii’s capital city on the island of Oahu. Famous photos of the beach stretching up to the silhouette of Diamond Head adorn millions of postcards. Thousands of visitors bask in the perfect Hawaiian sunshine on the sands of Waikiki. It is here that surfing was invented by Olympic swimmer Duke Kahanamoku. Whether you’re sunning, surfing or catching an outrigger canoe race, Waikiki is one of the world’s most popular beaches to enjoy.
Diamond Head
You can’t really see a picture of Honolulu or Hawaii without the silhouette of Diamond Head in it. Diamond Head is a volcanic cone. It bears its name from early sailors finding calcite crystals there thinking they were diamonds. For those visitors who like to hike, there is a 1.1 km trail that leads to the top rim where a panoramic view of the island awaits you.
Pearl Harbor – USS Arizona Memorial
On December 7th, 1941, Japanese imperial forces attacked Pearl Harbor Naval Station. The USS Arizona Memorial is a standing tribute to the battleship, the 1,102 sailors lost on board, and all those who perished that day. The memorial is set over the wreckage of the USS Arizona in the harbour and is free to visitors.
Aloha Tower
Since 1926, the Aloha Tower has stood as a lighthouse at pier 9 watching over Honolulu Harbor. At over 184 feet, the tower has been featured in film and television and is a landmark on the Honolulu skyline. With the Aloha Marketplace and the historic Falls of Clyde shipping vessel – the only iron hulled, four-masted ship in the world – the Aloha Tower is a must see landmark.
Iolani Palace
Iolani Palace is the only royal residence on United States soil. Both Queen Lili’uokalani and King David Kalakaua ruled the kingdom of Hawaii from Iolani Palace in the late 1800’s. The palace had electricity and telephones before the White House. Visitors will enjoy the rich history behind this beautiful Franciscan landmark.
Bishop Museum
Travellers wanting to immerse themselves in Hawaiian culture are sure to have Bishop Museum on their lists of sights to see. The museum houses the largest collection of Polynesian artifacts in the world and the third largest entomological collection in the United States. Aside from the amazing collections, the museum is home to gardens, lawns and a nearby planetarium.
