History of Ibiza, Spain

The Carthaginians founded Ibiza over 2,000 years ago, prior to the Romans and Moors occupying the island and by the 13th century it was under the Spanish influence as part of the kingdom of Mallorca. The locals champion the local dialect, Eivissence, as opposed to the official Catalan and English is usually spoken in shops and clubs.

In 1880 the construction of 180 windmills began, for the use of pumping water and for corn grinding. Although most are now defunct, some mills still work and because of their importance for the rural architecture of the Balearic Islands and the history of Ibiza, a number of them have been declared World Heritage sites by the UN, as have other such sites on this beautiful and surprisingly unspoilt island. In fact, everywhere you step you will come across a distinctive reminder of the history of Ibiza.
