Food Guide - Dining Out in Iceland
When it comes to dining out in Iceland, the freshness of the food served in restaurants is indisputable. The main ingredients in traditional Icelandic dishes are sourced locally. Fish are caught from the unpolluted oceans around Iceland and meat comes from lambs that grazed the meadows on the farms and rugged interior of Iceland. Fruit and vegetables are grown organically and used in abundance by the Icelandic chefs.
A holiday in Iceland is not complete by dining out and trying traditional Icelandic cuisines such as smoked lamb sausage, hangikjöt (smoked lamb), skyr, a yoghurt-like dairy product, harðfiskur dried fish pieces eaten as a snack with butter, fish and svið and singed sheep's head. These traditional dishes are served in most restaurants in Iceland. For those who prefer specialty cuisines, there is also a good selection of restaurants serving seafood dishes, beef, poultry, game meat and international cuisines.
Fast foods are comparatively expensive compared to a meal in a restaurant in Iceland. Icelanders choice of fast food is not MacDonalds but pylsa or hot dog, usually served with a choice of fried onions, fresh onions, tomato sauce, mustard and remoulade. It is cheaper than other types of fast food and it can be bought in small convenience stores, eateries and sweet shops in Icelandic towns.
