Geography of Indonesia

Indonesia is an archipelago that spreads across the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean in South-east Asia and Oceania. It compromises of 17508 islands and with an estimated 237 million inhabitants in the fourth most populous country in the world. The five largest islands are Sumatra, Kalimantan, New Guinea, Sulawesi and Java which is where the capital, Jakarta is located. Lying on both sides of the equator, Indonesia has a tropical climate and its location on the edges of the Pacific, Eurasian and Australian tectonic plates it feels the effect of frequent earthquake tremors. There are 150 active volcanoes, though the molten ash contributes greatly to the high agricultural fertility.
