Gion Matsuri

Location: Yasaka-jinja Shrine, Kyoto
Starts: Thursday 1 July
Ends: Thursday 29 July

One of the largest festivals in Kyoto, this month long event has its highlight on the 17th as 30 beautifully and artistically decorated floats parade the streets of Kyoto in the Yamaboko Float Parade. Each float is two-tiered, measuring about 20ft in height and adorned with finely crafted fabrics and sculptures. Such is the beauty of these floats that they are often referred to as 'mobile art museums'. The higher level of the floats houses musicians playing flutes drums and bells, as well as made-up children and dolls.
