Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages)

One of three large festivals held annually in Kyoto, the Jidai Matsuri Festival is a grand procession of over 2,000 people dressed in ancient costumes representing the various epochs of the Kyoto's 1200-year history. Departing at noon from Kyoto Imperial Palace, the parade traces a distance of almost 3 miles through the city to the Heian Jingu Shrine. The parades offers a fantastic opportunity to see the traditional hand crafted costumes of Japan as well as an insight into the country's history.
