Camping in Japan
Rating (8/10)
In recent years camping holidays have become more popular in Japan. The summer season especially can see many local Japanese tourists flood to campsites throughout the country. There are at present over 3,000 campsites in Japan. Most campsites are run by public bodies, many of which have tents as well as lodges and bungalows for rent. To avoid disappointed of these being booked however, it is best to take your own equipment for which there is usually a standard charge, and avoid the peak holiday seasons as overcrowding is common. Campsites can vary from luxurious to very basic, though many have running water, showers and toilets facilities. The more deluxe type may also have restaurants, stoves for cooking and vending machines on site. The standard charge is around ¥1,000 per tent, plus an extra surcharge per person, the use of facilities may not be included in the price. A list of the many campsites in Japan can be acquired from the Japan Tourist Office. Autumn is the best time for camping in Japan. During this season there are many festivals and community events.
