Hiking Activity Holiday in Japan
Rating (9/10)
With challenging alpine hikes through spectacular volcanic mountain, as well as easier walks through meadowed countryside dotted with villages, shrines and temples, Japan is a great destination of walking and hiking holidays. Hokkaido, Japan's most unspoilt island has a range of landscapes perfect for all types of hiking trips. The central regions also have much to offer in terms of hiking in Japan.
Japan's highest mountain, Mt. Fuji, is also very accessible. In summer, during July and August even inexperienced hikers can make the trip. Off season, is more perilous however, due to extreme weather conditions. Popular hiking trails are to be found in the mountains of Kirishima, Kamakura and in the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. Several mountains, such as Mt. Kurobegoro, Mt. Ryouzan and Mt. Tomoraushi offer more challenging hiking routes in Japan. There are also many walks to be had in the city centres, Kyoto for example has the Philosopher’s Walk; a fantastic stroll through cherry tree lined streets along the main canal with many places to stop along the way, including traditional craft shops and shrines.
