From January to December

Shopping in Japan can be fantastic experience. Traditional Japanese arts and crafts shops as well as modern department stores and shopping malls offer an amazing choice of products. However, shoppers should beware that Japan is not the cheapest place in the world. Even some locally produced products can be more expensive than they are abroad. Nonetheless, many original craft products and souvenirs can be surprisingly inexpensive.

Additionally, some Japanese shops also offer tax-free shopping, waiving the 5% sales tax for visitors. These stores are usually located in the main tourist districts and hotspots and most shops, including department stores and shopping malls, are open from around 10am until 7 or 8 in the evening. Japan shopping streets are often lined with speciality and crafts shops so it is not difficult to find some interesting souvenirs. These range from kitsch toys and lucky charms to more everyday objects such as clothing and textiles, to ornamental pottery and ceramics, bamboo and ironware.
