All over Japan you'll find many hot volcanic springs known as onsen. These natural spa baths have been used for centuries in Japan for religious, health and recreational purposes. There variety of these hot springs is as wide as there are many, some natural, some man-made, some small bath-sized, some as large enough for swimming, some outside, some in caves, some in snow covered mountains, others behind waterfalls or hidden under leafy canopies. Health spa resorts often operate like hotels, providing accommodation, meals and other services all included in the price, allowing you to stay over night. For short visits of a few hours, prices are reasonable and range from around ¥300 - ¥2,000.
