Fishing in Japan
Rating (7/10)
Fishing in Japan can be a little more complex than in other countries. Although no licence is needed to fish in salt water, fresh water fishing is regulated by local co-operatives. To fish in fresh water in Japan a ticket is required from the co-operative operating in that area. There are many of these co-operatives throughout the country and the area which they cover is not always clearly defined; the same river, for example, can be regulated by several different co-operatives operating over different stretches of a river. Prices vary from place to place and open season is generally from March, through to the last weekend in September. There are no regulations with regard to sea fishing, and still few regulations for fresh water fishing in Japan; minimum trout size in 15cm and there is no daily bag limit, salmon fishing is prohibited, but ‘catch & release’ of bass is prohibited.
